Interaction and Innovation at the House of Science in Câmpina, Romania: Robotics Workshop within the SENSE.STEAM Project

01/09/2024

On 14 August 2024, the House of Science in Câmpina became the hub of innovation, hosting a special event organized in the frame of the SENSE.STEAM project, in collaboration with the robotics group from the National High School “Nicolae Grigorescu”, facilitated by our local partners from GEYC.

The workshop brought together 35 members of the GEYC community, including local and international participants from both technical and non-technical backgrounds, who were given a unique opportunity to dive into the captivating world of robotics through engaging and interactive activities.

Discovering the First Tech Challenge and Team “Undefined

The day kicked off with an in-depth presentation of the First Tech Challenge (FTC), a prestigious international competition for students passionate about robotics. The attendees were not only introduced to the core aspects of FTC but also got to know the inspiring journey of “Undefined,” a renowned team in Romanian robotics competitions. Through this segment, participants gained valuable insights into the essential components that make up a successful robotics team, focusing on four critical departments: Marketing, Hardware, Programming, and Notebook.

A particularly informative part of the workshop was the discussion surrounding the engineering notebook—an integral element in any robotics competition. Participants learned how this comprehensive document tracks the design, development, and functionality of the team’s robot, while also ensuring the project aligns with competition standards. For many, this aspect provided a behind-the-scenes look at the rigor and detail involved in high-level robotics contests, offering inspiration to those eager to take part in future competitions.

Championing Gender Equality in STEM

One of the key highlights of the event was a lively debate on gender equality within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in Romania. Participants engaged in discussions about the existing barriers women face in STEM and explored potential solutions. The “Undefined” team, known for their commitment to inclusivity, showcased their efforts to foster diversity within their group, emphasizing the importance of creating an environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender. This conversation reflected the broader mission of the SENSE.STEAM project, which is dedicated to promoting equitable access to STEM education and encouraging a more diverse generation of future innovators.

Taking Control: Robot Command

As the day progressed, participants were given the exciting opportunity to take control of the “Undefined” team’s robot. They tackled various competition-style challenges, simulating real-world robotics contests. This hands-on experience not only allowed participants to experience the thrill of driving a competition robot but also reinforced their understanding of the technical, strategic, and team-oriented processes behind building and controlling a robot. The interactive nature of this session brought the theoretical elements of robotics to life, making it a memorable and educational experience for all involved.

A Horizon Initiative for the Future

This robotics workshop is part of a broader series of events in the frame of our Horizon initiative, funded by the European Union. The SENSE.STEAM project continues to push the boundaries of education by seamlessly integrating science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in a creative and accessible way. Through these multiplier events, the project aims to inspire the next generation of STEM enthusiasts and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity.
