European multidisciplinary consortium receives EU funding to develop STEAM education roadmap
The New European Roadmap to STEAM Education will take the shape of a roadmap to creative and holistic STEAM learning to support tomorrow’s learners and educators – be it in a school, in a museum, the woods or on a construction side. The SENSE.STEAM approach embeds sustainability and digitisation, participation and social inclusion, creativity and inquiry at its core. This ambition will sustain the development of our New European Roadmap for STEAM Education building awareness, action, and advocacy for STEAM education.
- The SENSE. project seeks to develop the ‘New European Roadmap to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) Education’, addressing the learning continuum from school to work life.
- The SENSE. consortium, coordinated by Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, includes 17 partner organisations across 14 different European countries that will establish 13 ‘STEAM Labs’ across Europe.
- The project was awarded funding by Horizon Europe and launched in September 2022, and it is due to run until 2025.
There is a widespread understanding that the future of a prosperous, democratic and sustainable Europe depends to a large extent on the quality of science education of its citizens. A science-literate society and a skilled workforce are essential for successfully tackling global environmental challenges, making informed use of digital technologies and counteracting disinformation and fake news campaigns.
While this common understanding, a future-proof Europe needing more young people taking up careers in STEM related sectors, we also know that the interest in STEM declines with increasing age. This effect is particularly pronounced among girls and young women; even those of them who take up science studies gradually forfeit their motivation.
Considering typical pitfalls of current science education practices and the advantages of artistic activity, SENSE. The New European Roadmap to STEAM Education puts forward an art-integrative science education, grounded into a sensory and participatory approach to STEAM education. SENSE.
