During the first year of the SENSE project, we gathered various STEM, STEAM, citizen science, and art practices to serve as a foundation for designing activities to be tested in the SENSE.STEAM laboratories.
- The approach we consider is one that empowers individuals to take ownership of their learning journey and realise its transformative potential. The focus for facilitators, educators and teachers when experimenting with these activities is to emphasise the approach. The central idea is to shift the focus from disciplinary concepts to subjective and collective embodied experiences while encouraging experimentation, diverse perspectives, co-creation and equal emphasis on artistic and scientific inquiry.
- To promote artistic and scientific inquiry practices on an equal footing, we recognise the transformative potential of imagination, craftsmanship, design, hands-on work, and attentiveness. This underscores the essential roles of both arts and sciences. It’s about creating an inseparable connection between these two domains, moving beyond a mere juxtaposition to explore, understand the world around us and to facilitate changes towards a more inclusive and sustainable life.
We consider these practices on three levels:
- 1) Arts & Sciences as
disciplinary bodies of knowledge - 2)
Art-infusion– Arts/Sciences as different modalities of knowing (filtering/augmenting sensorial - perception)
- 3)
Future-making– Arts and Sciences as ‘dispositifs’ – devices that are available at all - times and work together on an equal basis to keep the inquiry open to new questions and possibilities.
