While selecting, evaluating and curating the SENSE. learning companion we identified a range of topics common across a number of the activities. The following are our interpretations of common themes and our response to the underlying motivations of learners.

Sensory Exploration

Central to the SENSE. approach is engaging all human senses for inquiry, interpretation, and meaning-making in STEAM education. These activities foster embodied learning and sensory awareness, encouraging and enabling learners to connect deeply with their environments, materials, and experiences. The senses have also proven to be an accessible way to develop technical and imaginative competencies

Speculative Futures

Making and Designing emphasizes hands-on creation grounded in materials and processes as a way to explore concepts, solve problems, and express our identity. These activities introduce opportunities to observe and share experiences with the aim of creating individual or collective pieces of art and other product.
